At WPL, Solar Shelley Offers Mad Science Classes

Throughout the month of March, the Walpole Public Library (WPL) has been hosting Mad Science of Southern Ma & RI every Thursday to present on various science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) topics. Mad Scientist Solar Shelly has covered Dinosaurs, Worms, and Toys with an upcoming topic on movie effects to close out the month.

Each Thursday, children in grades Kindergarten through Third gather at the library to participate in engaging science activities and receive a brief lesson. Solar Shelly introduced a variety of toys, both old and new, and explained how each one functioned.

Before the activities began, Solar Shelly reviewed the three rules of Mad Science with the children, emphasizing the importance of listening, following instructions, and having fun. The workshop offered kids the opportunity to explore and understand how toys work while enjoying time with friends.

During the session, Solar Shelly discussed toys that utilize gravity, friction, and energy, demonstrating with examples like a ladder toy and a color-changing ball. The children then had the chance to play with toys at five different stations set up around the room, each focusing on a different aspect of STEAM.

As the kids interacted with the toys at each station, Solar Shelly guided them and explained the science behind each one. The session was filled with excitement and enjoyment, with everyone looking forward to the final class.
