Amazon Fresh stores, including one on Long Island, are moving away from ‘Just Walk Out’ technology.

Amazon’s Smart Cart Revolution: Redefining the Grocery Shopping Experience

Amazon is revamping its grocery chain by introducing smart carts that allow customers to skip the checkout line while also providing real-time spending updates and receipts. In response to customer feedback, the company has removed Just Walk Out technology from its Oceanside location. The decision affects 27 out of 44 Fresh stores across the country, including the only Fresh supermarket in New York state located in a former Waldbaum’s supermarket space.

Amazon has faced challenges in finding successful strategies in the physical grocery sector, despite initial predictions that its entry would disrupt the market. The company has shut down underperforming stores and paused expansion plans while focusing on selectively opening new Fresh stores and remodeling existing ones. Just Walk Out technology will still be available in Amazon Go stores and select smaller Amazon Fresh locations in the U.K., as well as offered to third-party retailers.

In a letter to shareholders in 2023, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged the need to find the right formula to make a larger impact in the physical grocery sector. He stated that the company will continue to invest in technology and innovation to improve the shopping experience for customers while also driving growth and profitability for the business.
