Amazon Shifts Focus: Why Its ‘Just Walk Out’ Tech Failed and What It Means for the Future of Cashier-less Shopping

Amazon.com Inc. is shifting its focus away from its “Just Walk Out” technology and towards traditional self-checkout counters and Dash Carts, according to reports. The company’s decision comes after the system faced challenges and relied on off-site contractors in India to monitor and label videos for accurate checkouts. Despite initial excitement surrounding the Just Walk Out technology, it failed to meet Amazon’s targets with 7 out of 10 sales requiring human intervention. This ultimately proved more costly than traditional self-checkout methods, leading Amazon’s stock to close slightly lower on Tuesday at $180.69.

The use of human-powered technology in Amazon’s Just Walk Out system highlights the complexities and costs associated with cashier-less shopping. The company’s ambitious plans to expand this technology beyond convenience and grocery stores were evident when it entered the clothing retail sector in 2023. However, the challenges faced by the system have led Amazon to refocus its efforts on other technologies, including Dash Carts and traditional self-checkout counters.

This shift in strategy reflects a growing recognition of the limitations of cashier-less shopping and the need for more reliable and efficient solutions.
