A Young Student’s Battle with Type 2 Diabetes: Understanding the Dangers of Obesity and Poor Diet

A 22-year-old male student in Hanoi recently sought medical attention for unusual symptoms such as tiredness, thirst, and frequent urination. Despite his young age, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which is typically rare in young adults. The patient had struggled with obesity since childhood and had been unsuccessful in his attempts to lose weight.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Tuan from the Department of Adult Endocrinology at the Central Endocrine Hospital stated that type 2 diabetes usually affects middle-aged individuals. However, in this case, the main risk factor for the patient was obesity, a diet high in carbohydrates and fats, and lack of exercise. The doctor emphasized the importance of weight control, dietary changes, and exercise as part of the patient’s treatment plan.

In Vietnam, the prevalence of diabetes is 7.3% of the population, with an additional 17.8% having pre-diabetes.
